Dear you,
Each day I begin with one drop, with three, in a glass of water. Sometimes the sun is tumbling into the kitchen when I begin the day & sometimes it is just that early cerulean blue the sky gets when the sun pushes its full weight up against what remains of the night. That thinning of the night so bare it becomes an almost unfathomable, a holy blue.
Une goutte, trois gouttes. In a glass of water. It sets the path for my day.

Lately, I have been working with Uva Ursi flower essence suspended in a tincture of Queen Anne’s Lace seeds.
When my pendulum chose these remedies for me on the last new moon, I did laugh a little & said to it, “yes I know, you always know.”
The Queen Anne’s Lace tincture I made years ago now & there is only a little of this particular batch remaining. I made it late in 2010 when I was living in a tiny cabin tucked into the dense old forests of western New York. The woods where I lived were bordered by fields full of wild yarrow & wild carrot & the neighbor’s chestnut colored horses.
The cabin was a hand-built shack & the bed was lofted & there was no electricity or running water, but I could walk to my herb classes & even to the secret patch of hawthorn, calamus, turtlehead & angelica I knew about if I went far enough southeast.
It was one of the only places I have ever lived in by myself. This made the entirety of the woods, the fields, the sun-slick chestnut horses all feel somehow like mine or I was theirs or maybe some kind of both. So much space. An absolute luxury.
Some part of me thrived & became wild strawberry, mist rising up off the rolling blue hills, crack of a twig underfoot in the dead of night. I did unfurl into it. A luxury absolutely.

Often I find it is the places that flower essences & tinctures bring us to that make up a good part of the medicine.
Place is medicine & that is undeniable to me.
Place grows plants & holds stones, skies, animals, all kinds of things.
Place is a language then.
It is covered in a language all of its own. And language rises up from its lap.
When I say: the cabin was a shack & the bed was lofted, the horses were chestnut grazing in a field of wild carrot, & the gorges there are full of limestone, shale, & sandstone—I am speaking the language of that place to you. Just a phrase of it, maybe only a sentence. There is so much more to say.

What I didn’t realize until my pendulum guided me to it, is that I needed the medicine of this place. Of my hands at twenty two. Of my hair long, uncombed, smelling like moosewood.
To go back to this place. This part of me. Something about this time & that time need to be in conversation together.
And so I retraverse something deep with three drops of uva ursi in tow. And remember something even if only unconsciously & let that memory move the many layers of me every day. This medicine making its way through layers of memory happening all at once, like the gorge water carving curbs into soft shale strata.
Une goutte, trois gouttes. In a glass of water. It sets the path for my day.

An essence for what remains of February:
Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata) made from a single blossom as a big rainstorm was rolling in on the afternoon of 16 February 2018 in Raleigh, NC. One of the first plants to flower here in early spring, each of the buds opening at a different time, almost as if we are being given little snippets of its message—that the light & warmth is in fact, coming; that we need to begin to open ourselves towards the sun. Star Magnolia essence is filled with courage & resilience, inspiring us to bloom & go for it, to go out on a limb. It also helps us to get into pace with our own timing, reminding us of when to bloom & when to stay in bud, & that there can be different parts of us doing both at the same time. Not every single piece & part of us needs to be open all at once, Star Magnolia reminds us of this, & teaches us how to close overly receptive spaces within us, as well as how to honor the spaces within us that are still gestating, the ideas & dreams that are not ready to be shown yet. Star Magnolia can also be helpful for instilling a single-task mindset vs. one of multitasking. It can also be helpful for soothing overly spontaneous & impulsive people, those who feel pressured to be overly productive. Star Magnolia reminds us to stay true to our unique design, & to the sustainability of our creations & output. Star Magnolia has a strong core & helps us to always remember our own inner strength, inner timing, & center of self. This essence teaches us that we are better able to connect to others & inspire them by living our authenticity in the world. Star Magnolia flowers are graceful, open, ready to receive yet also reserved. Call on Star Magnolia to remember your own beauty & strength, to be fearless & so soft all at once.
